Kanonkop Estate: A Legacy of Heritage and Wine Situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch region, Kanonkop confidently produces some of South Africa’s most premium wines. As a fourth-generation family estate, its legacy began with JW Sauer and has been meticulously handed down from father to son for over 40 years. Today, the estate remains in the capable hands of Paul and Johann Krige. The name "Kanonkop" finds its origins in the 17th Century, named after the kopje (hillock) from which a cannon was fired to alert farmers that sailing ships had entered Table Bay—a signal that it was time to journey toward Cape Town to trade their harvest.
